Vic: Couple in custody over infant's kidnapping =2 Melbourne

Detective Inspector Cecchin said police believed the family was not specifically targeted
in the kidnapping.

"At this stage it's still early days, however we feel at this time that it was a random
attack," he said.

"We will leave no stone unturned at the moment with regards to motive, which we feel
is crucial to what occurred on Saturday and it's something we will certainly work through.

"Until we speak to the people involved we won't actually know what the motive is."

Det Insp Cecchin said he was delighted with the public response to police appeals for
help solving the kidnapping.

"When you look at the incident, you have a small baby that has been snatched from her
mother's arms," he said.

"She's been punched to the ground, she's been sprayed in the face, it really has impacted,
not only on the investigators, but on the public at large.

"I listened to the radio today and the TV and just the overwhelming response from the
public and the empathy and sympathy for the family certainly is heartening."
