STOPPING LEETCH STILL CANUCKS' TOP JOB.(SPORTS)

Byline: Laura Vecsey

It was a done deal. The Cup would be kissed in New York, after all these years, and Brian Leetch would win the Conn Smythe Award for his outstanding play in these 1994 Stanley Cup playoffs.

The Rangers' celebration and the coronation of Brian Leetch were set. Champagne on ice. Jubilation on tap.

Then, during Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals at Madison Square Garden, New York woke up.

Or maybe it was the Vancouver Canucks who woke up. Maybe they took exception to the preponderance of media blitzing and kibbitzing that predicted an end to the Rangers' 54-year Stanley Cup drought.

It does not take a genius, nor Canucks coach Pat Quinn, to figure out what tactic would put a serious crimp in the Rangers' plans.

Stop Brian Leetch.

Stop him any way you …
